Guidelines
The Facility is equipped with the following instruments and services:
- HI98194 multiparametric probe (Hanna Instruments)
- Firesting-O2 oxygen meter (Pyroscience)
- 5 MX2501 pH loggers, 5 W-CTD-01 EC loggers, 5 W-DO oxygen loggers (HOBO)
- Hilux car (Toyota)
All the services of the facility can be used only after booking via e-mail, at least with a 24-h notice, writing to lifeincontext.biologia@unipd.it and waiting for a positive reply. Requests must include all these relevant details:
- Name and surname of the user
- Fund name: it must include UGOV or CUP code of the project, name of the fund holder and Department of fund allocation
- Supplementary information:
a) multiparametric probe: use in the lab or in the field
b) loggers: type and amount of sensor(s);
c) Toyota Hilux car: destination and type of service (“all-inclusive” if using the fuel vouchers, “no fuel” if not)
For all the services, a shared Google Calendar is available for checking the availability and booking status (users will be invited to join upon the first service booking). After every use, users must fill a paper register included in the instrument cases (Firesting oxygen meter and multiparametric probe) or in the document holder (Toyota car). For the HOBO loggers only, users must fill a shared register available on Google Drive.
HOBO loggers specific aspects
The MX2501 pH sensors have an integrated logger. The W-CTD-01 EC sensors and the W-DO oxygen sensors, instead, must be connected to an MX801 logger; both of them can be connected simultaneously to a single logger through a specific adaptor. The conjunction point at the sensor/logger interface is delicate, so every type of twisting or hitting must be avoided. The loggers can be collected and returned both at the Hydrobiological Station or at the Vallisneri building (for accessing Prof. Barausse’s lab, availability must be verified with him in due time by writing to alberto.barausse@unipd.it or calling 049 827 6199).
Toyota Hilux car specific aspects
The vehicle is available for any institutional needs and can be used by anyone with an employment contract with the University of Padova (including PhD students) and a driving license that is valid in Italy. Master or bachelor students cannot drive the vehicle. The keys, the fuel vouchers (if needed) and the document holder must be collected and returned at the Executive Secretary Office of the Department (ground floor of Vallisneri building), arranging an appointment with Dr. Raffaella Celin, who must be contacted in due time, calling 049 827 6178. The car must be parked within the parking area around the Vallisneri building. When using the fuel vouchers, the fuel register must be filled properly (number of liters and amount paid must be specified, together with a stamp and signature of the gas station owner), and every receipt must be attached to the exhausted vouchers, to be returned with the document holder. Any fines for traffic violations are the responsibility of the offender.
The LIC Facility is accessible from Monday to Friday, from 9:00 to 17.00. Users who need to access the labs out of working hours or during weekends/holidays must be previously authorized by the lab manager or by the scientific coordinator. Bookings might be cancelled at any time by the personnel if maintenance or repairs are needed, with adequate notice provided (excluding force majeure circumstances). The use registers will be used to calculate the charges on a 6-month basis. Users must report any malfunctioning or damages occurred before, during or after the use of any service to the Lab Manager. The responsibility for any damage occurred during the use will be attributed to the user and their research group unless otherwise
demonstrated.
Publications
Every data gathered through the instrument of this Facility and included in published papers must be acknowledged with the following (or similar) sentence: “We acknowledge DiBio’s Life In Context Facility, Biology Department, University of Padova, for the support in the acquisition and analysis of the data".
