The scientific objectives of research conducted in the Department of Biology embrace a large part of modern biology at various levels of organization, from molecules to organisms and up to ecosystems, in an evolutionary perspective.
A variety of model organisms are employed in the different research projects, including a wide range of autotrophic and heterotropic microorganisms, plants, insects, invertebrates and vertebrates including humans. The experimental approaches adopted make use of a rich collection of scientific instruments and research facilities.
The diversification of research lines is reflected in the wide choice of study programs organized by the DiBio: four undergraduate degree programs and six graduate programs in Biology, Molecular and Biomedical Biology, Biotechnology and Natural and Enviromental Sciences. The Department is also home to the PhD Program in Biosciences.
