The scientific objectives of research conducted in the Department of Biology embrace a large part of modern biology at various levels of organization, from molecules to organisms and ecosystems, in an evolutionary perspective.
A variety of model organisms are employed in the different research projects, including microorganisms, insects, invertebrates and small vertebrates. The experimental approaches adopted make use of a rich collection of scientific instruments and research facilities.
The diversification of research lines is reflected in the wide choice of study programs organized by the Department: five undergraduate degree programs and seven graduate programs in Biology, Molecular and Biomedical Biology, Biotechnology, Natural Sciences as well as Marine and Evolutionary Biology. The Department is also home to the PhD Program in Biosciences.
