Research area

Research Areas: Human Genetics, Genetics - Developmental Dynamics and Molecular Biology, Zebrafish (Danio rerio) and Human Pathology. Research lines: a) Use of zebrafish as a model for human arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy b) Use of zebrafish as a model for human mitochondrial disorders c) Use of zebrafish as a model for the FGR human condition d) Use of zebrafish for in vivo analysis of cell signaling e) Use of zebrafish for the analysis and treatment of human cancer cells. Techniques: production and analysis of transgenic zebrafish lines, biosensors and mutants; classical and confocal microscopy; microinjection of constructs, mRNA and morpholino oligos into zebrafish zygotes; xeno-transplantation of human tumor cells; immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization on whole embryo; routine techniques in genetics and molecular biology; gene targeting via CRISPR-Cas9 technology.

Proposals for thesis

Master's thesis topics: a) Use of zebrafish as a model for human arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy b) Use of zebrafish as a model for human mitochondrial disorders c) Use of zebrafish as a model for the FGR human condition d) Use of zebrafish for in vivo analysis of cell signaling e) Use of zebrafish for the analysis and treatment of human cancer cells. Bachelor's thesis; activities and techniques on display: a) Practical activities for laboratory management (cleaning of work areas, sterilization of materials, instrumentation calibration and maintenance) b) Basic techniques in molecular biology (nucleic acid extraction, PCR and genotyping, gel electrophoresis) c) Embryological techniques on the zebrafish model (collection and manipulation of fertilized eggs, observation of developmental stages, fixation, immuno-histochemistry and in situ hybridization, in vivo and post-mortem observations and documentation by classical bright-field/fluorescence and confocal optical microscopy.
