Vazrick is a post-doctoral fellow at DiBio

Can you summarize in few words your research?

My research project in the Pievani lab is focused on finding common patterns between biological and cultural diversity (“Biocultural Diversity”) in Italy and understanding the evolutionary patterns involved.

What is the most rewarding and the most challenging part of your work?

The most rewarding part of this project for me is to learn more about the multicultural landscape of Italy and its biodiversity. The most challenging part, however, is to understand the causes of this diversity and how one affects the other.

Tell us your story: what brings you to DiBio?

I am an entomologist and evolutionary biologist by training with a personal interest in the presence and role of animals in arts and cultures. I have studied and published on cultures from the paleolithic to ancient Egypt and from Mesopotamia to medieval Europe. This project is a culmination of my two interests with a focus on Italy, one of the most beautiful and bioculturally diverse countries in Europe.

What’s your favourite “toy” for research – and what can it do?

A butterfly net! Since it can shed light to many questions in biology, since butterflies are the best studied model organisms in many areas of biology.

What are your interests outside science?

In my spare time I enjoy reading, movies, and playing guitar.
