LRRK2 and GBA1: partners in crime in Parkinson’s disease?

Our new study on the cross talk between two major genes involved in Parkinson’s disease, LRRK2 and GBA1, is published now in npj Parkinson’s disease. This is a collaborative effort among several international centers in Europe and USA coordinated by our team @DiBio

In essence we discovered that mutations in LRRK2, which lead to an overactive enzyme, affects the hydrolase activity of lysosomal GBA1/GCase but the effect is different depending on tissue, cell type and organism. We also compared different methods to assess GCase activity to identify the most suitable to use as reference for future studies. We believe that our study adds an important piece to the complex puzzle that links GBA1 and LRRK2, directing the field toward the most suitable models to investigate this pathway in future studies.
