The 8th Congress of the Italian Society of Evolutionary Biology (SIBE), Padova 1st-4th September 2019

The 8th SIBE congress will be organized by the Department of Biology of the University of Padova and hosted in the Botanical Garden and in the ‘Galileo Galilei’ Main Hall of Palazzo Bo in Padova.

The Botanical Garden of the University of Padova is the most ancient botanical garden in the world and UNESCO world heritage and will host the first three days of the congress. We are very pleased to announce that the Opening Lecture will be given by Scott F. Gilbert (Swarthmore College, USA and University of Helsinki, Finland), leading expert in the field of evolutionary developmental biology. Prof. Gilbert will give a talk on the holobiont as selective unit of evolution and the importance of developmental symbiosis.

In the first three days of the 8th SIBE Congress, eminent scientists will provide an invited lecture in the framework of five symposia:
Units of diversity: tools, strategies and case-studies to define species limits
Invited speaker: Birgit Schlick-Steiner (University of Innsbruck, Austria)
Evolution in marine environments
Invited speaker: Lloyd Peck (British Antarctic Survey, Cambridge, UK)
Social behaviour: ecology and evolution
Invited speaker: Daniela Campobello (University of Palermo, Italy)
Conservation and evolution
Invited speaker: Christopher Clements (University of Bristol, UK)
Phylo3: Phylogenetics, Phylogenomics & Phylogeography
Invited speaker: Daniele Silvestro (University of Gothenburg, Sweden and University of Lausanne, CH)

In addition, SIBE is offering a crash course in Molecular Clocks using BEAST, on the morning of September 1st, at the Botanical Garden. This event is the closing part of the course “Bridging Phylogeny and Population genetics: Inferring divergence and selection at both interspecies and intraspecies level” organized in cooperation with IRSAE (the International Research School in Applied Ecology) and beginning on August the 27th at the Fondazione Edmund Mach in San Michele all’Adige (Trento, Italy).

For the last and closing day, the congress will move to the XVI century Palazzo Bo. In the historical venue of the ‘Galileo Galilei’ Main Hall, we will have the great opportunity to hold the ceremony for the first edition of the ‘Luigi Luca Cavalli Sforza Award’. Such an initiative is meant to recognize eminent personalities in the research field of evolutionary biology. In this first edition, this SIBE prize will be awarded to Montgomery Slatkin (University of California at Berkeley, CA, USA). Montgomery Slatkin will give the first Cavalli Sforza Lecture, which will be open to the public.

On the last day, the final symposium “Population genetics and population genomics” will also take place and will be organized in partnership with the Italian Anthropological Association (AAI). In the framework of this last symposium, Montgomery Slatkin will give an invited lecture open to both SIBE and AAI congress participants.

Join us at the 8th SIBE Congress! The Abstract submission is open until the 15th of June, and don’t miss our SIBE’s got talent event on the first evening!
