faunistics and ecology
More criptic and often less charming than other vertebrates, amphibians and reptiles have long been ignored in faunistical and ecological research, even in the deeply explored European biota. Recently they have become important targets for evolutionary and conservation biology. |

alpine salamanders
Climatic oscillations shaped the present distribution of amphibians and reptiles in southern Europe. Relic, differentiated lineages of Alpine salamanders have been discovered unexpectedly in recent years on the Venetian Prealps. |

herpetofauna in Veneto
Distribution of amphibians and reptiles in Veneto has dramatically changed in the last century, particularly in the strongly urbanized Venetian Plain. Here some species are now limited to isolated biotopes. Multi-year, volunteer-based investigations are contributing to map and trace the distribution of species and to assess their conservation status. |
