The Center for Biomedicine (CBM) at the European Academy of Bolzano is conducting research in the fields of biomedicine, with a focus on neurodegeneration and cardiovascular medicine, including genetics and epidemiology and characterisation of molecular disease mechanisms with the view to clinical application of research findings.
As part of the focus of the Neuromedicine research group we are investigating the molecular and neurobiological bases of Parkinson’s Disease. Parkin and PINK1 are two genes responsible for monogenic forms of parkinsonism that have important roles in the molecular pathways involved in the clearance of damaged mitochondria. Using a two-step purification approach (Tandem Affinity Purification) we identified Parkin-binding proteins in the mitochondria. In order to further investigate their roles in the maintenance of mitochondrial integrity, we are planning to perform a series of molecular biology and cell biology experiments and to use also iPS-cell derived neurons as a cell model.
For this research project we are offering a place for a Master student. Students will gain technical experience, which includes training to work with published data (literature searching) and performing experimental work (including a broad range of molecular and cell biology techniques and data evaluation).
An internship compensation is foreseen. Ideally, the applicants would have contact to a Professor within their university that supports the practical training for the master’s degree studies at the Center as an external site.
