Subcellular compartmentalization is essential to process biological reactions simultaneously. A distinctive feature of eukaryotic cells is the communication between different organelles that can occur through vesicles or membrane apposition at a distance of 10-30nm that permits the exchange of molecules, ions and lipids.

We developed a palette of single vector-based SPLICS sensors based on the split GFP protein specifically designed to simultaneously detect and quantify multiple heterotypic interactions in different spectral flavors both in vitro and in vivo occurring at short- and long-range contacts between disease-related organelles.

The availability of tools to explore membrane-bound organelles is crucial to identify defective pathways at the basis of pathological conditions such as neurodegeneration or cancer.
