Can you summarize in few words your research?

My research fills into nanomedicine field since I am involved in studying, from a biological point of view, new delivery strategies to enhance anticancer drugs accumulation in tumours. In particular, we exploit biocompatible nanoparticle (NP) -based delivery systems able to encapsulate multiple drugs in order to combine simultaneously more than one therapy, as for example chemotherapy and photodynamic therapy (PDT). More recently, my interest is oriented toward the development and characterization of biomimetic NPs, covered with biological components to impart tumour-homing capacity to the nanosystem, thus improving the selective accumulation of the transported drugs in malignancies.

What is the most rewarding and the most challenging part of your work?

The high multidisciplinary environment of nanomedicine projects, spanning from chemistry, photo-physic, photobiology, medicine, etc., giving me the opportunity to immerge myself in topics sometimes very far from my background.

Tell us your story: what brings you to DiBio?

After graduation in Industrial Biotechnology, I chose DiBio also for my PhD in Bioscience and Biotechnology, being involved in a very stimulating EU founded project centred on photo-nanomedicine. DiBio was my home also for the following 4 years of post-doc, before covering my actual position.

What’s your favourite “toy” for research – and what can it do?

Since the very early times of my carrier my favourite toy has been light, since as the saying goes ‘light can heal’. I am studying different applications of light, ranging from oncology where light is used to kill cancer cells through photosensitizer activation to antimicrobial PDT where light is used to kill antibiotic-resistant bacteria by activating endogenous porphyrins.

What are your interests outside science?

I love mountains and a lot of mountain-related sports such as ski, freeride, bike, hiking, climbing. I love to spend the holidays travelling across Europe with my family in our van to breath the freedom that sometimes lack in the lab!
